A special ceremony was held to bury Torah scrolls, tefillin, and mezuzot: a years-old tradition, which was initiated by the Chief Rabbi of Ashdod, Rabbi Yisrael Elizare, to give special honor to the holy archives, and he determined that near Shavuot, a ceremony would be held to bury the Geniza, in order to give importance to the holy scriptures that had been discredited or torn.
At the burial, with the participation of rabbis and the chairman of the Religious Council, Rabbi Ovadia Dahan, sheets of discarded Torah scrolls, sections of discarded tefillin and mezuzot were placed inside a huge clay urn, and properly sealed with mortar.
The Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Sheinin, was honored with the burial of the urn in the grave, which was specially dug, and immediately afterwards the rabbis covered the pit with dirt.
