Several months after the city of Beitar Illit was removed from the national priority map, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz announced today (Thursday) that he intends to promote the bill "Greater Jerusalem, the Capital of Israel," which proposes to expand the borders of Jerusalem, and apply Israeli sovereignty and the special benefits of the capital city to the settlements in the Jerusalem area.
His proposal comes against the backdrop of the failure of talks between Israel and the Palestinians, with no progress in the negotiation process in sight.Minister Katz said that the law will also include the ultra-Orthodox settlements in the area, including the ultra-Orthodox city of Beitar Illit, while the news will also benefit other places, such as Ma'ale Adumim, which is also suffering from a complete freeze.
According to the bill, a joint council will be established for all localities in the Jerusalem area that "will allow, similar to existing models in the world, Greater Paris or Greater London, for centralized activity, while maintaining the municipal independence of each authority.".
The chairman of the Haredi headquarters in the Likud and a member of the Likud presidency, Yaakov Wider, said in response: "Minister Katz took an important step today in advancing the bill that will enable the development and empowerment of the Haredi settlements in the Jerusalem area, and we welcome that.".
While the United States is licking its wounds from the failure of talks with Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with no real sign of a renewal of political talks in the background, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz announced that he will promote the 'Greater Jerusalem, the Capital of Israel' bill.
