Starting tonight, the main edition of News 10 will air a new series of articles: Haredi Autonomy. The series was created by Avishai Ben-Haim, the channel's commentator on Haredi affairs.
The series deals with the question - how did Haredi society manage to thrive precisely within secular Israel, from which it is distinct?
The first chapter will deal with the question of how, in fact, the Haredim are doing? With a low rate of labor market participation and many more children per family, how is it possible that the Haredim are doing financially, how do they buy apartments? How are basic goods cheaper for them than for secular people? And what is the meaning of the phenomenon of the grocery stores that provide almost every possible product for free?
The second chapter will deal with the question of whether the secularists actually fund the Haredim?
Former minister Rabbi Shlomo Benizri wrote an entire book on the subject, and the Haredim from the 'Dosim' project are also convinced: "It is not the seculars who finance the Haredim, but the Haredim who finance the excessive consumption of the seculars." In contrast, the opinions of economists Prof. Avi Simhon and Prof. Omer Moav will be presented.
The third episode will provide a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the Haredi education system: What does a Haredi school look like from the inside? Why do the leaders of the Haredi education system oppose the study of the Hebrew Bible? And are they really able, thanks to their immersion in the Gemara, to complete secular studies in a short period of time?
The fourth chapter will deal with the "rule of the Maranim." In this chapter, Ben-Haim will attempt to explain how the Haredim replaced the autonomy previously granted by the government in the Diaspora to Jewish communities with a variety of mechanisms of supervision and control: from education in obedience to the great rabbis to harnessing commercial companies to instill strict Haredi values on the entire Haredi society, such as kosher cell phones and the separation of men and women on buses.
""Urdu Autonomy" with Avishai Ben-Haim will be broadcast every evening on the main edition of News 10.
