At least 44 people have been killed in heavy floods that hit the Balkan region - the countries of Serbia and Bosnia, and the fear is that the number of casualties will increase significantly.
According to the authorities, who rely on the meteorological service, the floods were caused by an intense and rare rainfall. According to the measurements, three months' worth of rain fell in a few days. They say an event of this magnitude occurs once every 120 years.
10,000 people were evacuated from the town of Bijeljina in eastern Bosnia after the Sava River overflowed its banks. The mayor, who asked for help, said simply: "We are under water." Journalists on the ground reported that the water level exceeded the height of the buildings. The authorities are rescuing the trapped people using boats and helicopters.
In northern Serbia, tens of thousands of people were also evacuated in military trucks. "Like in a war," as the residents describe it.
Several cities and towns in Serbia are currently submerged under water and mud up to two meters deep.
