The social network Twitter gained a new and particularly "worthy" member last night (Monday): United States President Barack Obama.

In the first tweet on his account, Obama wrote: "Hello, Twitter! This is Barack. Really! After six years, they finally gave me my own account.".

The president's 'tweet', as expected, garnered many responses - over 217,000 followers in the first 45 minutes of its existence.

After just a few hours, Obama had already amassed more than 900,000 followers. The hardworking president apparently fell in love with the platform - and after the first tweet, he posted another tweet with a photo of himself visiting a police station in a New Jersey town.

Obama describes himself in his profile line with the following words: "Father, husband and the 44th President of the United States," and his Twitter page features a photo of him with his family and heads of civil rights organizations, crossing a bridge in the city of Selma, Alabama, as part of events marking the 50th anniversary of violent protests in the city, which were held earlier this year.

And who is the president with the new account following? Among the accounts are those of his classmates, his favorite Chicago sports teams, cabinet members, various government departments, and key members of the White House staff.

Former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton are also on the "friends" list, but he does not follow the Twitter account of Hillary Clinton, his former Secretary of State, who is considered the leading Democratic candidate in the 2016 election.

The account will be "a new way for President Obama to communicate directly with the American people, with tweets written solely by him," Alex Wall, a social media strategist working with the White House, wrote in a post.
