Gennady Kernes, the Jewish mayor of Kharkov, Ukraine, who was shot yesterday morning and critically injured, was rushed on a special flight that took off from Ukraine early this morning to Israel - and was hospitalized at Elisha Hospital in Haifa.

Yesterday, an unknown person shot Karnes, 54 - a personal friend of the city rabbi and Chabad emissary in the city, Rabbi Moshe Moskowitz - on one of the streets of Kharkov, while he was doing his morning workout.

He was rushed to the emergency room of a local hospital, unconscious and critically injured, and was taken into surgery. Doctors were able to stop the bleeding in his back and stabilize his condition. 

The Kharkiv police have opened an investigation into the assassination. At this time, it is unclear who is behind the act.

Kerns is considered a supporter of ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, and strongly condemned the protesters in Independence Square in Kiev, which led to his removal from power.
