Drama in the city of Kharkiv, Ukraine: An unknown person shot the mayor this morning (Monday). Gandhi Karns.

According to a report on the website Tshagem.net, Kearns was injured in his back while on his morning run in the city center.

The injured mayor is Jewish and a personal friend of the city's rabbi, Rabbi Moshe Moskowitz.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A city spokeswoman said: "Doctors are fighting for his life.".

In the past two months, there has been great tension in the east of the country, where Kharkiv is located, due to violent riots between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian activists who seek to annex the region to Russia.
