Ancestor's work: For many years, Rabbi Meir Ohana, the rabbi of the Kfar Yovel settlement, has served as commander of the Upper Galilee region, as well as a rabbi in the Border Guard. Last week, his son, Yaakov, joined him.
Rabbi Ohana, a graduate of Haredi yeshivots, who to this day wears both the Border Guard uniform and the 'yeshivite uniform', began his military service in the Golani Brigade, and after his release he enlisted in the Border Guard, while at the same time serving as the rabbi of the Kfar Yovel settlement, but also as commander of the settlement's readiness squad.
Last week, his son Yaakov was commissioned as a soldier, after four months of basic training. The son, also a graduate of a Haredi yeshiva, chose to enlist directly in the Border Guard.
""Since I was born, I have always seen the combination of the black suit and the uniform as a mission and not an obstacle," Yaakov said. "I believe that every citizen of the country should serve a meaningful service, which is why I chose to enlist in the Border Guard.".
""For me, studying Torah and maintaining a religious lifestyle does not prevent me from contributing equally, as in all sectors. 'I am with my people in trouble.' The entire Jewish people must bear the burden of protecting the people. From the time we left Egypt until Israel became a nation, we have been threatened by our surrounding enemies.
"Taking part in the security burden and defending ourselves from our enemies is a commandment written in the Torah.".
