A demonstration by the extreme left against the war was held this evening (Saturday night) at Habima Square in Tel Aviv.

As the protest began, the police noticed demonstrators who had gathered at the scene in violation of the High Court ruling limiting the number of participants to up to 600 demonstrators, and in violation of Home Front Command guidelines and emergency regulations prohibiting gatherings at this time.

As part of a situation assessment with a representative of the Home Front Command that took place on the ground, it was clarified that there was a real risk to human life given the gathering under the existing security circumstances - accordingly, a police officer announced the dispersal of the demonstration. "There is a danger to public safety here and you are violating the High Court's directive. Please obey the High Court's decision and evacuate.".

17 protesters were arrested.

Earlier, in the middle of the Sabbath, High Court judges ordered the state to immediately respond to a petition seeking to hold protests against the war with Iran - despite Home Front Command instructions. The state did not respond, and the High Court ruled that up to 600 people could demonstrate in Habima, and up to 150 in the rest of the country.

The High Court emphasized in its decision that the Home Front Command also admits that in other places there are gatherings that are not enforced: "The meaning of these words is that the police enforcement of the Home Front Command's directives is carried out against protest demonstrations but not against other places and events. This situation is difficult to overcome.".

Shas movement She sharply criticized the High Court decision that was made during the Sabbath.

Under the title "Strong protest against the desecration of Shabbat and the severe detachment of High Court judges," the message said: "The trampling of the sanctity of Shabbat and the law on work and rest hours in a High Court decision issued in the midst of a holy Sabbath, which allowed the gathering of hundreds of anarchist protesters in Habima Square in violation of Home Front Command instructions, while the Western Wall and the holy places are closed, indicates a severe detachment, arrogance, and arrogance of the residents of the Ivory Tower.".

Shas also said: "The Shas movement will act immediately after the holiday to file a complaint against the panel of judges who acted in violation of the law.".

Chairman of Degel HaTorah, MK Moshe Gafni: ""The judges of the High Court once again demonstrate a lack of responsibility for what is happening in the country, along with a lack of sensitivity and insensitivity to issues sacred to the Jewish people. In the midst of the Holy Sabbath, they allow an outrageous ruling to be made for a demonstration against the war in order to prove their superiority over the Israeli public.".

""Let's hope that this behavior of the detached judges will disappear from the world, beyond the fact that their decision is against the law.".

MK Meir Porush"There is no limit to the disconnection of High Court judges from any vestige of Jewish tradition. After persecuting Torah scholars, ruling time and again against Jewish law, now they are also trampling on the Sabbath. It is possible that they could be judges in the legal system in England; in the Land of Israel, it is appropriate for them to be judges with a Jewish streak.".

The Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, He attacked the court's decision, claiming that it endangers the protesters, police officers, and fighters.

Ben Gvir: "The Supreme Court's decision issued on Shabbat endangers the protesters, the police and the fighters. Even on the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and the other holy places, the Home Front Command does not allow worshippers to arrive - but the High Court on Shabbat issues another decision that harms the security of the police and citizens.".

""Allow protesters to tweet about the law just because they are protesting against the State of Israel? Issue a decision requiring the Home Front Command and the police to respond on Saturday within one hour?? It's time to ask: High Court judges who make such decisions, are you from Israel?""

Deputy Minister of Communications Y.Charel Eichler"The High Court judges proved today that even from the abyss it is still possible to descend to the netherworld.".

""Their order to the state to respond in the midst of the holy Sabbath of the Lord is a declaration of war against the sanctity of the Sabbath and against the tradition of the Jewish people. The judges are doing this intentionally in the midst of the Sabbath because the Sabbath is the symbol of the uniqueness of the Jewish people, and they want to turn Israel into a nation like all nations.".

""Precisely at this time when we are in dire need of the virtue of Sabbath observance, these detached judges chose to impose public Sabbath desecration in the Jewish state, without any need for personal protection, but solely to continue to pit citizens against each other in demonstrations against the war of defense against Israel's enemies.".

""The Sabbath will claim its insult, and the dictatorship's rule will be remembered as a disgrace for all time!""

Minister Yariv Levin He said in an interview with Channel 14 about the High Court's decision on Saturday: "The attempt to decide instead of the Home Front Command is arrogance beyond compare.".

MK Simcha Rotman, Chair of the Constitution Committee: "Everything you need to know about the High Court of Justice - When people who wanted to pray presented to the High Court judges in 2020 differences in enforcement of the Corona restrictions during demonstrations compared to prayers, they yawned... When the High Court judges were now presented with the differences in enforcement of the Home Front Command restrictions between demonstrations and other gatherings, they hysterically demanded answers, while on Shabbat.".

Court spokespeople issued an unusual clarification regarding the discussion on Saturday about the demonstration in Habima Square, justifying the move by saying that "it is an issue of life safety":

  • The petition – which, among other things, concerned permits for demonstrations on Saturday night, April 4, 2026, was opened in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, the eve of Passover. The petition was accompanied by a letter from the petitioners dated March 29, 2026, which was addressed to the Home Front Command but remained unanswered by the Home Front Command.
  • In order to discuss the petition and complete its consideration before the Sabbath begins, an exceptional hearing on the petition was scheduled for Friday, during the Passover break.
  • The state did not formulate a position on the issue before the hearing held on Friday, and it was held without a written response being submitted.
  • Despite the requests of the panel of judges, the Home Front Command and the police refused to give a position regarding the demonstrations during Friday, insisting that the position on the subject would be given on Saturday, after they had inspected the demonstration sites.
  • Under these circumstances, and with no choice, the Home Front Command's latest position was only conveyed to the court during the Sabbath.
  • The state even agreed, exceptionally, to the petitioners' request to hold a hearing on the matter during the Sabbath. The panel did not grant the request to hold a hearing on the Sabbath, and the two decisions rendered during the Sabbath were given after a telephone consultation between the judges, so no employee was brought to court.
  • It is clear that this is an issue of protection of life related to the safety of the demonstrators and the police (see the Procedure Regulations (Immediate Relief on Rest Days and Outside Regular Working Hours in the Courts), 5731-1971), and hence the court's duty to provide a response to the issue during the Sabbath, in order to make a decision that will guide all the parties involved, including the Israel Police and the Home Front Command.

Israel Police Responded to the court spokespeople: "After reviewing the judicial authority's response as stated in the article, we will set things straight. In complete contrast to what is claimed, in fact the Israel Police presented its position to the High Court of Justice before the start of Shabbat!" Furthermore, and contrary to what is claimed, only the Home Front Command was asked to present a proposed outline for holding protests.

""On the sidelines, but not on the sidelines of their importance, we would like to emphasize that in light of the High Court's decision and in order to implement it, hundreds of police officers were deployed at the risk of their lives, and were even forced to violate the Sabbath.".

MK Moshe Gafni He said in response to the judiciary's announcement on "Pikuach Nefesh": "I propose, then, to appoint the Chief Rabbi as President of the Supreme Court. He at least knows the sensitivity and complexity of the rulings on issues related to the Sabbath and the values sacred to the Jewish people - issues that even the great rabbis are very cautious about.".

""In contrast, there are those who allow themselves to make far-reaching decisions, including violating the sanctity of the Sabbath, based on detached and irresponsible considerations. This is not just a mistake - it is a profound disregard for Israeli tradition and public sentiment.".
