Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei issued a statement today (Friday) about the increasing protests against the regime, addressing President Donald Trump, following the threats he had sent him - and saying: "Let him deal with the problems in his own country.".

Khamenei claimed in a statement: "The US president should know that all dictators fell at the height of their power. America's hands are stained with the blood of more than 1,000 Iranians, including leaders and innocents. Iran stands firm and will not give up even a little on its principles, and will not tolerate working for foreigners. Everyone should know: The Islamic Republic came to power thanks to the blood of hundreds of thousands of noble people. The Islamic Republic will not retreat in the face of those they are destroying.".

Khamenei accused rioters of "wanting to please the US president by causing damage to public property. They set fire to trash cans to please him. Last night in Tehran and in some places, a group of vandals destroyed buildings. The US president made an irrelevant statement that if the Islamic Republic does so and so, I will side with the disruptive and harmful people, and he should go and run his country, which is in trouble.".

The speech comes after 13 consecutive days of protests against the regime, which have left dozens dead. Last night, the internet across Iran was shut down by the regime, and during the night, many protesters burned images of government symbols across the country.

This morning, a senior Iranian official was quoted in the New York Times as saying that many in the Iranian government do not know how to deal with the wave of protests and are talking and corresponding with each other about how to contain them. "We are at a loss for how to stem the avalanche of protests. It is likely that the Revolutionary Guards will take control of the situation.".

It was also said that they may take action within the main cities where the protest is taking place.
