Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei today (Wednesday) addressed the United States' proposal to establish a regional corporation to oversee the uranium enrichment process - and rejected it outright.

In a speech, Khamenei said: "The US proposal for a regional uranium enrichment corporation goes against our national independence.".

He added that the American proposal contradicts the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic: "The proposal completely contradicts the slogan 'We are capable' which is an important principle in the independence of our country.".

According to him, the main focus of the "enemy's" efforts is the issue of enrichment. "A nuclear industry without uranium enrichment is useless. Enrichment is a fundamental part of Iran's nuclear program. We will not give up uranium enrichment.".

He added: "The United States will not succeed in weakening Iran's nuclear program.""

Khamenei added defiantly: "The first thing we said to them was - who are you to tell Tehran whether it will have a nuclear program or not?""

The news website Axios reported this week that the proposal submitted by the United States to Iran as part of the negotiations on the nuclear agreement would allow Tehran to enrich uranium in a low quantity, for a period that has not yet been determined.

According to the report, under the agreement, Iran will not be able to build new enrichment facilities and will be forced to dismantle the critical infrastructure for processing the uranium it has already enriched.

It was also reported that the deal specifies that Iran will be required to stop research and development of its centrifuges.

In addition, Axios reported that Iran will not develop enrichment capabilities for non-civilian purposes, and will only be able to enrich uranium to a concentration of three percent. According to the American document, the agreement will establish a strong monitoring system that includes immediate approval of an additional protocol by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
