The letter claims that Golan's statement undermines the fighting spirit at a time when IDF soldiers are giving their lives in the field.
According to them, a clear message must be conveyed to all those trying to harm the State of Israel that the law enforcement authorities are backing and strengthening the IDF at this time.
The letter, a copy of which was sent to the attorney general, reads: "On behalf of the Heroism Forum, the Forum of the Fallen of the Iron Swords War, we are appealing to you with an urgent request to open a criminal investigation against the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Mr. Yair Golan, for serious statements made by him this morning, May 20, 2025, in a media interview. Mr. Golan stated this: "A sane state does not wage war against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not aim to expel a population.
""We believe that these things radically exceed the limits of legitimate public discourse, and fulfill the elements of the offense stipulated in Section 103 of the Penal Law, 5737-1977 - defeatist propaganda. According to the section: 'Whoever disseminates, during wartime, and with the intent to cause panic in the public, information that is likely to undermine the spirit of Israeli soldiers and residents in their stand against the enemy - is punishable by five years in prison. Whoever intends to harm the security of the state - is punishable by ten years in prison,'" the bereaved families wrote.
The letter further stated: "These statements were made at a time when the IDF is operating heroically on a number of fronts, when our best sons are sacrificing their lives on the front, and on a difficult day when the Israeli people are burying heroes they lost in the war. Mr. Golan's words have real potential to undermine the fighting spirit of the public and IDF soldiers, as well as to accelerate delegitimization in the international arena.".
""As a forum working for victory and for strengthening the State of Israel in times of war, we call on you to investigate the above serious statement, and to examine the motives underlying it, and also to convey a clear message to all those who are trying to harm the State of Israel in times of war, that the law enforcement authorities are strengthening the IDF and the people at this fateful time," the families emphasized.
