The government discussed today (Monday) at its weekly meeting the establishment of a state investigation committee in accordance with the High Court's demand - and decided that in light of the cabinet's decision to expand the fighting, there is no need to investigate the events of October 7th now.

It was also decided that the government and the Knesset would draft a bill to establish a special state investigation committee, which would represent different opinions in the public and would gain the trust of the majority of the public - and that the government would update the High Court of Justice in 90 days, and not by May 11, as the Attorney General demanded.

Minister Dudi Amsalem attacked the demand for the establishment of a state investigation committee, saying: "The Supreme Court is part of the matter. Yitzhak Amit stole a position for himself and wants to establish a state investigation committee against the government.".

Minister Haim Katz harshly attacked Deputy Attorney General Avital Sompolinsky, who came in place of Attorney General Bar-Rav-Miara, and wondered: "Do you think it's normal for an IDF general in the middle of a war to hire a lawyer? Only in a country of morons could this happen.".

Minister Avi Dichter criticized: "In the evening the cabinet makes a decision to expand the war in Gaza, and in the morning they decide on an investigative committee in which those who are leading the war are the ones being investigated. From the day we decided to establish the committee, everyone who comes to it will have a different focus. The prime minister is not Superman either.".

Minister of Communications Shlomo Kari: "If you ask the public whether you are in favor of a state investigation committee - the majority is in favor. But when you elaborate and ask 'should Yitzhak Amit form the committee' - the answer is no way! The High Court of Justice should be investigated for the violation of security and not lead the investigation. The Knesset should be allowed to formulate a law now to establish as broad an investigation committee as possible, and the government will set the deadline.".

Minister Orit Struk said in the debate: "It is important that this government establish the investigative committee and define its mandate so that it truly examines what needs to be examined.".

The letter sent by Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara ahead of the hearing stated: "Make a decision regarding the investigation of the events of October 7. The government's refusal to make a decision regarding a state commission of inquiry causes damage and harms the investigation of the truth.".

""Experience shows that even if a decision is made to establish a state investigation committee in the near future, it will anyway begin work in at least a few months. Second, most of the senior security officials who are expected to give testimony before a state investigation committee have already retired or will soon retire from their positions, and in any case they are expected to be required to take part in the ongoing state audit.".

""In any case," she added, "the effectiveness of future action by a committee of inquiry, as time passes, and on issues in which the State Comptroller has already conducted an audit, after he is given the versions of the key parties involved, is expected to be harmed, with an emphasis on harming the possibility of reaching the truth and harming the rights of those being investigated.".
