In a tweet on the social network he owns, 'Truth Social,' the US president explained that the renovated prison will be used to incarcerate criminals who, he said, "contribute nothing to society and cause only suffering and sorrow.".
However, the president did not explain how the move would be carried out.
Trump wrote: "When we were a more serious nation in the past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them away from anyone who could harm them. That's how it should be. We will no longer tolerate these serial criminals, who spread filth, bloodshed and chaos on our streets.
""That is why today I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, the FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen Alcatraz, which has been significantly expanded and renovated, to house America's most brutal and violent criminals.".
The President emphasized: "We will no longer be held hostage by criminals, thugs, and judges who are afraid to do their jobs and allow us to remove criminals who came to our country illegally. The reopening of Alcatraz will serve as a symbol of law, order, and justice. We will make America great again!""
Alcatraz prison is located on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of San Francisco, California. It closed about 60 years ago and has been used as a museum ever since.
'Alcatraz became famous as the most difficult prison to escape from, due to its location, and during its years of operation, no one managed to escape from it alive.
The facility and the stories of the prisoners held there became material for films and books that told the stories of those who tried to escape from it, including the films "Escape from Alcatraz" and "The Alcatraz Break.".
The most famous prisoner imprisoned at Alcatraz was mafia boss Al Capone.
In 1963, the prison was closed due to high maintenance costs and the difficulty of maintaining an adequate level of incarceration conditions, and since then it has been one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco.
