לוחמי צה"ל קיימו בשטח הרצועה טקס זיכרון מצומצם בהובלת הרב הראשי של צה"ל תא"ל הרב אייל קרים, לאחר שהחללים הועברו לארונות מכוסים בדגלי ישראל. במהלך הטקס, הרב קרים קרא פרק תהילים.
משם יצאו הארונות לשטח ישראל ויעברו לבדיקות זיהוי במכון לרפואה משפטית באבו כביר. ברבנות הצבאית הדגישו כי ייתכן שתהליך הזיהוי יהיה ממושך וייארך עד 24 שעות. בתום זיהוי הגופות תועבר הודעה למשפחות ומשם לעם ישראל.
