The coalition today (Wednesday) rejected the bill by MK Merav Michaeli of the Democrats, which sought to establish that any list interested in running for the Knesset would be required to include at least 401 TP3T of each gender - just as MK Michaeli did as chairwoman of the Labor Party on the Labor lists for the Knesset.
The proposal is intended to create a situation in which women, who constitute more than half of the population, will be full partners in shaping national policy and leading the country.
To the delight of the United Torah Judaism and Shas parties, whose list composition was threatened by the bill, the law was struck down.
MK Merav Michaeli said after the defeat: "This chauvinistic coalition is once again concerned with preserving the closed men's club in politics. The coalition under whose watch more women have been murdered, dismembered, raped, and harmed in every possible way, is voting against the possibility of women being in a place that will address this discrimination. MKs who were elected due to little protection for women are voting against amending discrimination against women. This is a fight for women's basic right to vote and be elected, and we will continue it until we win, just as women won the fight for the right to vote.".
