The announcement said that the ban was temporary - and stemmed from security considerations. According to a report in 'Kan News', the ban was imposed in the wake of the double attack that took place in the republic, which is part of Russia, about ten days ago, during which Muslim terrorists attacked two synagogues and a church in the cities of Makhachkala and Derbent. The attacks killed 23 police officers and civilians. Some of the terrorists were eliminated, and some were arrested. Discussions on a ban on wearing the burqa have been ongoing in Russia for the past few months. This is after a bill on the subject was submitted to the 'Duma' - the Russian parliament. Supporters of the proposal argue that "Russia does not have a tradition of hiding the face." The security services also support the proposal. Opponents belong mainly to the Muslim religious leadership. For example, the Mufti of Moscow Eldar Alotdinov warned that such a ban "could stir up the spirits throughout Russia.".
