Jerusalem Education Week: The Jerusalem Municipality and the Haredi Education Department in the municipality held a special evening of appreciation for Haredi education last night, at the initiative of Mayor Moshe Leon - with the aim of honoring the sacred work of women in elementary education and enhancing the power that exists in every female educator.
At the center of the conference was a special discussion - titled: "Hear a transparent story - about the transparent and rejected child." Professionals from the fields of education and care analyzed the challenge for educators of rejected children and presented solutions and answers.
At the center of the discussion were the words of the great men of Israel on the sensitive subject, presented by Rabbi Avraham Finzel, director of the 'Hochmat Shlomo' institutions.
The centerpiece of the conference was the words of the Supreme Rabbinate Rabbi Dan Segal, who spoke out strongly against imposing a boycott on educational institutions.
Haredim 10 presents the full transcript, published here for the first time:
Rabbi Segal:
They talked about this thing about girls, girls, sometimes harassing one of the other girls, and it may not even be with the intention of harming, of causing pain. But in fact, it's one of the most serious things there is.
Hagar converted, what did they tell him? What is Judaism, what is everything? What are you afraid of, Sunny? You will not do to your friend what is hated by you - you will not do to your friend. No one wants to be hurt or humiliated or harassed.
And this is not just a detail. This is the basis of everything. Idach means complete disgrace, the main thing. Because this is what the Gaon says in the Epistle, not only not to cause sorrow, most of the Torah is to make a person happy. In any case, this is one of the very, very serious things, that we really need to be very aware of, not to give in to things like that that they will find in school.
But rather, on the contrary, to educate each other to be happy, to enjoy each other, to enjoy is the will of God, blessed be He. I conclude with Tana Debi Eliyahu, where he writes, and says, My children, I have lacked nothing from you. I ask one request of you: that you love each other, fear each other, and respect each other. So whoever truly practices this, then his reward will be doubled and doubled, because he is also a man for the place and a man for his fellow man, and God Almighty will help that there will always be love, brotherhood, peace, and companionship among us all.
question:
Teachers ask whether they should investigate and demand in class whether there is a student in such a situation that she is rejected by society or wait for it to surface.
Rabbi Segal:
If we knew there wasn't one, then why would we need to look for it? But if it's something that could be common, it's common, we don't have to wait. And even at this time it's not obvious, but there may be a daughter who is already suffering, who is being treated, on the contrary, we need to see to change it as much as possible.
question:
The last question, there is a teacher who says that dealing with such social problems in the classroom will probably come at the expense of her hours at home, during hours that she doesn't have to work, and in any case, the salaries of teaching staff, both male and female, have been greatly eroded in recent years, due to rising costs, and there are no supplements.
Rabbi Segal:
They need to be told firmly, everything they teach there is not so that they can do math. Everything else - it's all to raise them to be human beings. Without that, then there is no human being here. What good does it do that she knows the Bible, that she knows the laws, to be a human being.
There will always be a person. There has to be a person. So that's the minimum required, rather, in all studies, they should do it in such a way that they can convey this tone of - to make the other happy, to enjoy the other, to do good to the other, that should be the move. It's not like it's an addition and not in the program so it's like they added extra hours here - it's his body, even when teaching the fifth grade, it should be put inside.
question:
I meant at the expense of her hours at home.
Rabbi Segal: If she is a teacher, she should do her job faithfully, but why should she be given more money? God help us.
question:
If possible, congratulations to everyone who organizes this thing.
Rabbi Segal: May God help you to be wise and successful in whatever you do, and may God bless you with God's help, and may there not be any mishap, not even accidental, but only great success.
