Slovakia's Prime Minister was shot while greeting a crowd - and his life is in danger

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and seriously injured Wednesday after an assassin fired four bullets at him, hitting him in the stomach and chest. He was airlifted to a hospital in Bratislava.

According to reports in Slovakia, his life was in danger.

A spokesman for the hospital he was taken to said: "The prime minister was brought to the hospital in Handlova conscious. We treated the gunshot wounds and his vitals stabilized. He was transferred to a higher-level facility after receiving treatment at the hospital.".

The incident occurred in the city of Handlova, Slovakia, when the Prime Minister went out to greet the audience at the end of a government meeting held there. An assassin in the audience shot at him.

According to reports in Slovakia, the assassin is a 71-year-old Slovak writer and poet, a resident of the town of Levice in the southwest of the country.

Pizzo was elected to the position last year. He is considered pro-Russian and opposes aid to Ukraine. In late October 2023, he announced that his country would stop providing military aid to Kiev.
