Seventy-six years after the declaration of independence, we look at what is happening these days and wonder if this can be called independence. Is there another country in which all the countries of the world interfere in its internal and security affairs and feel they have the right to dictate how it should conduct itself?
The degree of interference has reached absurd proportions in recent years. Foreign countries fund associations that work to change the image of the country. Foreign governments pour large amounts of money into organizations that constantly petition the courts, burdening law enforcement. Arabs who engage in illegal construction receive money from countries around the world, with a clear intention of eroding Israeli sovereignty.
We also saw the intensity of the involvement in the campaign to create balance in the legal system. Almost every country saw fit to express its 'protest' about the legislative procedures, as if it were normal for one country to interfere in the appointment of judges and the balance of power between the authorities in another country.
Plug the hole
The climax is unfolding these days. We are literally fighting for our lives, after a horrific massacre committed by Hamas monsters in peaceful communities, against the elderly, women and children. The atrocities that these scum committed on the last Simchat Torah rival and perhaps even eclipse the horrors of the Holocaust. Can there be a single normal person who does not understand that this evil must be eradicated from the world and that such horrific atrocities will never happen again?
And now the entire world is standing against us, placing shackles on our feet, making absurd and unreasonable demands - to inject food and fuel into the enemy that is fighting us, and exerting pressure aimed at preventing the collapse of Hamas and the chance to create a new reality that will guarantee peace and security for us, and also a normal future that is not filled with hatred and murderous lust for the children of Gaza.
It is easy to blame the world, which is not free from anti-Semitism, for remaining silent in the face of the horrors of the Holocaust, and whose 'morality' knows how to feel compassion for the barbaric murderers and not for the Jewish victims. But our sages have already taught us that it is not the mouse that steals, but the hole. For decades we have allowed this 'hole', which deprives us of our independence and allows the world to interfere in our affairs.
Spirit of independence
It all stems from the internal exile of the country's leaders. When Jews danced 'Ma Yafit' before the Fritz, at least they had no choice; they did not have the 'strongest army in the Middle East' at their disposal. Here, a supposedly independent state was established, and yet it behaves like a submissive 'musket' during the Fritz days.
The purpose of the Jewish state's existence is the protection it is supposed to provide for the Jews. We have seen the miracles of God in all of Israel's wars, including the last campaign. This indicates that this is the Creator's will - that Jews will not stand helpless, but will fight with all the strength and power they possess so that Jewish blood will not be in vain. When we proudly and resolutely stand for our rights, and make it clear to the world that we categorically reject attempts to interfere in our affairs - we will merit God's blessing and success in our actions.
But for this, we need to instill in ourselves a spirit of Jewish faith and independence, not of inferiority to the nations of the world. To be certain of God's right over the Land of Israel, and of the righteousness of our war against those who seek our lives. When we plug the 'hole', the mice will have nowhere to crawl.
