The Prime Minister's incoming military secretary, Brigadier General Roman Goffman, recently wrote a document in which he recommended that Israel continue to control the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian population after the war. This was published this evening (Wednesday) in Israel Hayom.
According to the report, the document was distributed among all decision-makers at the political level and in the defense establishment.
Since the left-wing position dominates the defense establishment, the document was received with a mixture of surprise and anger, because Goffman's proposal contradicts the official position of the Israeli government and the IDF, as presented to many parties since October 7.
It was also reported that the defense establishment initially believed that Goffman wrote the document in coordination with the Prime Minister's Office or at its request - but he denied this and claimed that he wrote the words based on his own personal opinion.
Goffman is considered an officer who is not afraid to speak his mind. During Gadi Eisenkot's time as Chief of Staff, he attacked the military leadership for not being aggressive enough for his taste and demanded that the ground forces be used more in combat.
On October 7, he went out to fight terrorists and was injured in a clash at the Negev Gate. After a period of rehabilitation, he served for several months as Chief of Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a position he recently completed. The IDF had already appointed him to the position of head of the brigade dealing with combat methods, but Netanyahu chose him as his next military secretary.
The IDF spokesman rushed to disavow it: "This is an internal, classified document, which presents the officer's position only and does not represent the official IDF position.".
