The uproar caused by a group of Israelis living in Berlin when they published their shopping receipt at a local supermarket is once again shining a spotlight on the cost of living in Israel.
Today, Finance Minister Yair Lapid also joined the visitors, who in an interview with Galei Tzahal promised to act to prevent unjustified price gaps and even bring additional products under supervision in the near future.
Someone who doesn't buy the promises is Itzik Alrov, one of the leaders of the struggle against the cost of living, and founder of the 'Consumers' movement:
""The Minister of Finance chooses the boxing ring that is most convenient for him, and now he is trying to take the problem of the cost of living and narrow it down to the price of milk. The price of milk is nothing more than a symptom of the 'so successful' economy and the incredible growth that everyone enjoyed showing off.".
""The introduction of the Milky Way into the oversight will not cover the fact that almost a year and a half has passed since Lapid became finance minister and still no bulldozer has hit the ground and housing prices are only getting higher and higher. The dream of an apartment is getting further and further out of reach for young couples.".
""Instead of Lapid turning worlds upside down to return housing prices to the sane level they were in 2007, he is trying to cover up past failures with a 0% VAT band-aid.".
""Three years after the big protest, the food basket for the average Israeli family still hovers around NIS 4,000. A second mortgage that rests on the shoulders of all citizens - and the ridiculous solution to prices came in the form of putting sweet cream under supervision.".
""We still haven't heard Lapid say a word about the decay and the concentration and lack of competition in the banking system in Israel, the results of which are being paid for by family owners and small businesses that are collapsing like a house of cards.
""If they put a foot in his way, he should resign from the government. But he shouldn't try to seek foolish achievements by introducing more sweet cream into supervision.".
