From time to time, the question pops up on interesting news sites: Who is the dumbest criminal in the world?
There are many answers to this cardinal question. But last week, one was caught that may end up high on the list.
Charles, a traffic offender in the state of Oregon in the United States, was caught breaking the law in front of a senior police officer. The man had a previous conviction, which carried a suspended sentence.
The officer signaled Charles to stop, but he, believing he would be able to evade, increased his speed and fled the area. The officer called for additional vehicles, and a chase soon developed between the police forces and the fleeing criminal.
At some point, Charles realized that escaping in the car would not last long, and he abandoned his car and fled into a field with dense vegetation.
The officers galloped after him into the field, but the tall leaves prevented any possibility of a search.
Charles almost escaped.
But he didn't take one thing into account: the aftershave he had sprayed on himself that morning.
It turns out that Charles likes to wear perfume, and he poured a considerable amount on himself, the scent of which carried far away.
The scent led the police straight to the fugitive's hiding place, and he was surprised to find the handcuffs closing on his hands.
Only when he realized what had given him away did he respond and say: "It was a mistake to put on perfume today.".
