The State Archives in the Prime Minister's Office has been working for the past two and a half years to uncover thousands of files that tell the story of the Yom Kippur War - on the front lines, in the home front, and in the government.

For the first time, it is possible to feel and explore, through the source documents, the drama that unfolded and the feelings among the public, the army, and the leadership, in a comprehensive and direct manner.
Some of the materials present the events minute by minute and allow us to recreate the feelings of those who were present at the events.
State Archives Director Ruth Abramovich: "The State Archives has been mobilized for two and a half years for a project to make the files and materials that tell the story of the Yom Kippur War accessible to the public. Unlike other archival publications, this time we chose to bring as much of the story of the war as possible, which affected all levels of life in Israel.
The work of exposure was carried out by many employees of the archive in most of its departments. This is the largest exposure the State Archives has ever made, and the materials are offered to the general public in a distribution intended to assist in locating information in the most convenient way, despite the complexity of the raw archival material.
"I invite the public to search the materials for personal information, listen to the voice clips that have the power to take us back in time, contact the State Archives for assistance in the search if necessary, and find answers to open questions that may still be bleeding.".
The State Archives worked to collect materials from various government ministries, and now, with the end of the confidentiality period, it is presenting them for public review.
The materials include thousands of certificates, audio tapes and photographs, stenograms and original files from government ministries, military, political and civilian documents, photos, audio clips, testimonies, reports, minutes of government and war cabinet meetings, discussions and assessments of the civil defense situation, home front preparations during the war, and more.
These materials, most of which were previously classified, have been examined, scanned, exposed, and some have also been censored, and are now presented for the first time as an archival collection of information about the war, starting with the decision-making process under conditions of uncertainty by the leaders, the fighting on the various fronts, the Israeli home front's handling, the diplomatic talks with Arab countries (Egypt and Syria) mediated by the powers, and up to the reaching of the separation of forces arrangements with Syria at the end of May 1974.
Exposure in numbers:
Approximately 3,500 files, including:
- Approximately 1,400 paper bags
- Approximately 1,000 photos
- Approximately 800 sound clips
- Approximately 150 transcripts
- 8 videos
The collection provides a fascinating glimpse into many angles related to the war and, thanks to the materials published here for the first time, enables complete and comprehensive research.
