The United States Department of Transportation has opened an investigation into El Al following a complaint of prohibited discrimination against an American passenger of Palestinian origin, Natan Gutman reported today (Tuesday) on Kan News.
According to the report, the office opened an investigation following a complaint filed by Noor Wazwaz, when she asked to board her flight to Israel at Newark Airport in July.
According to the complaint, she was sent for additional security screening, separated from the other passengers - and was prohibited from boarding the flight with her computer or phone charger.
Ultimately, Wazwaz was not allowed to fly and was put on the next flight to Israel.
She tweeted videos and updates about what she went through at the airport - and that's how the issue made headlines.
The U.S. Department of Transportation confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing. "The department is committed to protecting the right of passengers to fly free from any form of improper discrimination," Transportation Department officials said.
They added: "The ministry investigates every allegation of discrimination received against an airline, and is currently investigating the complaints against El Al.".
El Al told 'Kan News': "A request was received from the United States Department of Transportation following a complaint filed by the passenger. El Al is reviewing the details of the case with the Aviation Security Division, and will respond to the Ministry of Transportation's request in an orderly manner.".
""During the inspection of the passenger's luggage, several alerts were received from technological means that required further investigation. The actions were taken in accordance with security procedures and the instructions of the authorized authorities. During the security inspection process, we acted quickly to transfer the passenger to an alternative flight to Israel.".
It should be noted that this case is not related to discussions and agreements between Israel and the United States on preventing discrimination against Americans of Palestinian origin upon entry into Israel, as part of the process of granting visa exemptions.
However, the opening of the investigation into the matter emphasizes the importance that Americans see in preventing discrimination against their citizens of Palestinian origin.
