Our lives are characterized by a fairly regular and routine cycle. Day follows day, week follows week, month after month, year after year. Many seek external means to break the routine. Some go out to travel the world; some change professions and workplaces; others move from city to village and village to city. All of this is for one purpose – to find the meaning of life.

The truth is, the framework of Jewish life gives unique content and meaning to each day and each week. The Jewish calendar is incredibly diverse. Each month has a unique character and character. The holidays and observances focus attention on their unique content. There are days of mourning and days of joy.

This week's Torah also presents new topics for discussion and consideration each week. This is especially evident in the month of Elul, which changes the entire system of daily life.

Stop, check and improve

The month of Elul is the month of repentance and mercy. In the Sephardic communities, they have already begun reciting the Selichot. A spirit of purification and purification is beginning to take hold in hearts, and the scent of the approaching High Holy Days is already felt in the air.

You can just go through the month of Elul, like Tevet and Tammuz, but then you miss out on the richness of this month and the enormous contribution it makes to the human soul. It is better to stop and absorb the special messages that this month brings with it, and then life takes on new meaning.

The month of Elul is analogous to the annual balance sheet in the business world. A businessman will never be able to know whether he is advancing or retreating, making a profit or losing, unless he stops his current activities once a year and takes a detailed balance sheet of the state of the business. Similarly in spiritual life – a person cannot know where he stands, and it is certainly difficult for him to improve and advance, if he does not stop and take stock of himself.

For this purpose, we have been given this month, in which we stop the routine race of life. In this month, we change the atmosphere, examine ourselves, examine our achievements in the past year, face our failures and shortcomings honestly, and decide to correct, improve, and add.

Dear days

Even those who feel the need to be connected to the news and participate in polemics and verbal skirmishes all year round would do well to take a break during these days. And on the day a person weds their son or daughter, should they allow themselves to engage in these matters or should they concentrate entirely on the great joy? Well, the days of Elul are too precious to waste on frivolous matters.

We have had a difficult year, and the internal rift is still very disturbing. This is the time to turn to God and ask for mercy for the people of Israel and the Land of Israel. May God instill in us a spirit of brotherhood and reconciliation. May He grant in our hearts to stop the quarrels and hatreds, and to seek what is common and unifying.

The Jewish people are one unit, in which the individual and the whole are interconnected. The strengthening of each one strengthens the Jewish people as a whole. Let us all strengthen ourselves, take advantage of the month of Elul, and may we have good writing and signing for a good and sweet year.
