Firefighters were called today (Monday) to Abba Eban Street in central Jerusalem, following a report of a strong smell of gas.

The firefighters who arrived at the scene, using their gas and explosives detectors, located a significant accumulation of gas, which was within the explosive range - which posed a tangible and immediate danger of the gas exploding and, as a result, harm to buildings and those present.

Firefighters evacuated an avenue of shops, as well as one residential building, where gas had accumulated significantly - in order to prevent risk to employees and residents, and to prevent the gas from accidentally exploding by residents and employees on site.

With the assistance of the Jerusalem Police, the road near the buildings was blocked.

At this stage, firefighters are using dedicated systems to evacuate the accumulated gas, close the gas sources to the neighborhood, and also conduct scans to locate additional gas accumulations and leaks in the neighborhood.
