Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said this morning (Monday) that the opposition should have supported reducing the reasonableness requirement, but its political position prevents it from taking substantive action.

""Today, the Knesset will, with God's help, approve in first reading the reduction of the reasonableness grounds in Justice Solberg's outline. This is an essential need for which there is broad agreement. Justice Aharon Barak and other Supreme Court justices also supported this, as did a large portion of the opposition leaders," Smotrich wrote.

He said, "This is the way to allow an elected government to implement its policy according to the law and prevent, for example, cases like those that happened in the past when the High Court prevented the deportation of terrorist families. Even after that, there will remain grounds that exist all over the world and on the basis of which the court can criticize government decisions, but without replacing the judgment and value-based decisions of elected officials.".

He added: "If the opposition had acted fairly and on the merits, they would have supported this necessary amendment, but unfortunately everything they do is from a position and they oppose everything, when their real goal is to overthrow the government.".

""We will continue to promote with determination and responsibility the necessary reforms in the judicial system, as we committed to the public before the elections and in accordance with the mandate we received from the people.".

The Knesset will vote today on the first reading of the law to significantly reduce the grounds of reasonableness.

The plenary debate will begin at 4:00 PM, with the opposition trying to delay the vote as much as possible. Currently, the vote is scheduled for 10:00 PM.

Tomorrow, the Constitution Committee, headed by MK Simcha Rotman, is expected to convene and prepare the law for second and third reading.
