How did the conservative Rabbi Edelstein provoke outrage in Egypt? It turns out that on Arab social networks today (Thursday) the Rosh Yeshiva was attributed with a statement, according to which he said in his weekly class at his home that Egypt stands at the head of the nations that hate Jews - and that an end must be put to all enemies of Israel.
According to a report by Roy Keyes and Akiva Weiss in 'Kan News', the Egyptian news website Rasad, affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, states: "All nations hate us, and Egypt is foremost among them. Israeli scholar Edelstein harshly attacks the Arabs and Egyptians and demands an end to all enemies of Israel.".
Egyptian journalist Ahmed Rifaat told Russia's Al-Youm channel in response that Rabbi Edelstein was supposed to have the wisdom of a religious leader and that this statement carries a great deal of hatred and incitement. He added that these statements ignore the reasons for the hatred, which are not directed at Jews, but at those who occupied the land, desecrated the holy places of Islam and Christianity, and practiced racism against Arabs to the point of murdering them in cold blood in front of their own families.
Following the outrage, Rabbi Edelstein's office issued a clarification in Arabic and English: "In recent hours, statements by Rabbi Edelstein have been circulated in the Arab media as if Egypt is behind the terrorism against Israel and that we must pray to eliminate it. These statements distorted the Rabbi's original statements, which indicated that Egypt is in peaceful relations with Israel. It is a shame that there are those who use the Rabbi's words for incitement and lies.".
Kan News reported that the President's House was involved in issuing the response from Rabbi Edelstein's House.
