Gottlieb explained on her Twitter account that the reason for submitting the candidacy is a desire to block the appointment of Justice Yitzhak Amit to the position of President of the Supreme Court.
""I intend to apply for the Judicial Appointments Committee. Why? Because I, Justice Minister Levin, and another minister who is elected will form a blocking bloc against the appointment of Judge Yitzhak Amit as President of the Supreme Court.".
According to her, "no reform is needed for this, only resilience and resistance to the scum that will continue to be thrown at me for my audacity to uphold the provisions of the existing law as it stands.".
MK Gottlieb's announcement conflicts with a coalition promise: The place on the committee for selecting judges was promised to Otzma Yehudit.
Yitzhak Amit was elected to serve as a Supreme Court judge in 2009. According to the seniority system, Justice Uzi Fogelman was supposed to be appointed to the position of President of the Supreme Court. However, due to the fact that Fogelman declined the appointment, Amit is next in line by seniority, and is therefore supposed to be appointed President of the Supreme Court - after the expected retirement of President Hayut on October 16, 2023.
He is scheduled to hold the position until his expected retirement on October 20, 2028. Alongside Amit, Judge Yosef Elron also decided to run for the position of president.
