Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri speaks for the first time, in an interview to be published tomorrow (Monday) in the newspaper 'Haderech', about the halting of the legislation of the legal reform, refers to the conduct of the coalition and sends a threatening message to the opposition.
""We did not behave correctly. Unequivocally. We went into nuclear war with a pop-up gun," Deri criticized the coalition's conduct. "We made a mistake by presenting the entire reform package together. We did not organize proper information, a proper strategy for how to pass the reform, how to explain to the public exactly what the reform means and how it solves the problems.".
In an interview, the Shas chairman attacked the protesters: "They tried to shut down the country. Their clear line was unequivocal, this is in fact a coup d'état, unequivocal.".
Deri also referred to the talks taking place at the President's Office and issued a threat to the opposition: "If anyone tries to take advantage of our goodwill and our responsibility, he will find a united, strong, cohesive, and just coalition at the summer conference, which will act wisely, without mistakes, to pass all the changes step by step.".
Deri emphasized: "Let's not forget - the laws are already ready for second and third reading, we don't have to wait another few months. As soon as we want, we can enter the plenum and pass the laws.".
Deri said of the coalition: "We are going into the break stronger, more united, more just. We will try to reach dialogue and agreements. If we are not answered, we will come to the summer conference much stronger and also much more experienced. We will not make the mistakes that were made in recent months. We will make the change, this is our promise, and we will keep it.".
Deri explained the decision to freeze the legislation: "We need to know when to bow our heads a little, so that later we can raise it and succeed in reaching the goal. If we reach an understanding of what is good, of course we will all be happy that there are understandings and agreements. If not - if they disrupt the negotiations - we will move forward without them. If we reach an understanding - that's what is good, if not then we will continue with the legislation as planned. We need to give an opportunity during the coming month for dialogue.".
According to him, if the reform were put to a vote now, it would not have a majority in the Knesset plenum and the coalition would fall apart. Deri also noted that "the danger of bloodshed and civil war was real and tangible.".
