Breaking away from Britain? The Reserve Bank of Australia has decided that the portrait of the late British Queen Elizabeth II will no longer appear on Australian $5 banknotes.
This was after the bank made a decision in principle that members of the British royal family would no longer appear on Australian banknotes.
The $5 bill is the last to feature the Queen, and there are no other bills featuring a portrait of a member of the royal family. The portrait of the new King Charles III, who is still awaiting his coronation in the coming months, will also not appear on the bill.
The Australian Bank has decided to replace the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with a design that "honors the culture and history of the first Australians.".
Officially, the King is still the ruler of Australia, and he is the one who governs on his behalf – but many in Australia, including in the indigenous community, see the decision as another step towards Australia's separation from the shackles of Britain.
According to a report in 'Kan News', the Reserve Bank of Australia emphasized that the decision regarding the Queen's portrait was made after consultation with party and political figures.
Australia is torn over the country's continued membership in the British monarchy and the Commonwealth. In a poll conducted last October, the Sydney Morning Herald found that 43% of Australians would prefer an Australian to appear on the $5 note, and 34% said King Charles was their choice.
