New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced tonight (Thursday) that she will resign from her position - and will not run for a second term.
In a statement to the media, in a tearful voice, she said that in less than three weeks, on February 7, her last day in office would be.
At the press conference she convened, she said: "I'm not leaving because it's difficult. I'm leaving because with this privileged position comes responsibility, the responsibility to know when you're the right person to lead, and when you're not. I know what this police force demands, and I know I no longer have enough energy to fulfill it properly.".
The resignation comes in the midst of a tight election year in New Zealand, but Ardern claimed that her decision had nothing to do with her party's decline in the polls.
It is not yet clear who will replace her. The Labor Party will have to decide on everything in the coming week.
Jacinda Ardern became the world's youngest prime minister when she was elected to lead New Zealand at the age of 37 five years ago.
According to her, she currently has no plans for the days after retiring from her position.
