This is a 100% jump in the number of confirmed cases of the virus per day from a week ago. The number of patients is expected to double every eight days.

The data also shows that there has been a 431% jump in the number of seriously ill patients in the past week. 103 people are hospitalized in serious condition - of whom 30 are in critical condition and another 28 are on ventilators.

The Director General of the Ministry of Health, Professor Nachman Ash, said today that if there is an increase in morbidity, it will be necessary to consider reinstating the obligation to wear masks in closed and crowded spaces.

In an interview with the Neubach Foundation on the program "Seder Yom," Professor Ash said that currently the use of a mask is a recommendation, but the Ministry of Health is considering making it mandatory. He added that the increase in the number of confirmed cases is real and significant and results from the BA5 strain being more contagious and the vaccine being less protective, because we have moved away from the vaccination date.
