Joaquino Gemino, 61, has lived for years under an assumed name in the town of Galpagar, Spain, near the capital Madrid.

According to the Reuters report, Gemino - who was a member of the "Stida" mafia group - escaped from the Reviva prison in Rome in 2002, and in 2003 was sentenced to life imprisonment for a murder committed several years earlier.

The investigators, who had almost given up on searching for the perpetrator, managed to find a clue using the Google Maps app - and thus located him against the odds.

A report of a street view photo from the town, showing a man who looked similar to Jamino standing in front of a fruit store, reached investigators, and from there the investigation developed until the perpetrator was captured.

""The photography helped us confirm the direction we were investigating in other, more traditional ways," said Nicola Altiro, deputy director of the Italian police unit.
