Prime Minister Naftali Bennett stated today (Sunday) at the beginning of a government meeting that two middle school students infected with the Omicron variant recently died in Britain. "Omicron also affects children," Bennett said. "We see it in other countries, and we see it in Israel. Just this week, two middle school students from the same grade in England died from Omicron, one was not vaccinated at all, the other was apparently partially vaccinated." The official statement issued at the end of the Prime Minister's remarks also included the reference to the British boys, so this is not a one-time mistake. However, an investigation by a Besheva reporter, Assaf Mishnayot, revealed that the incident did not happen at all. An inquiry with Bennett's office came to a similar conclusion. At the same time, the Public Health Authority in the British Ministry of Health updated today that currently there are no known deaths in Britain of people infected with Omicron. The World Health Organization also announced a few days ago that no deaths from the new variant spreading around the world have yet been identified. The Prime Minister's Office responded: "The Prime Minister referred to the deaths of two British schoolchildren, who contracted the coronavirus and died shortly afterwards. The Prime Minister was referring to the coronavirus and not to the microbe, which is a variant that is still being studied. "More than 25 British students have died from the coronavirus. The coronavirus is a virus that endangers human life and health, including young people. The Prime Minister is concerned about the risk posed by the coronavirus, its symptoms and long-term consequences on the health of Israeli children, and calls on all parents to vaccinate their children as soon as possible.".
