NASA launched a special spacecraft from California today (Wednesday), designed to collide with an asteroid to deflect it from its orbit. This is an experiment by the space agency designed to test a defense system to deal with the threat of asteroids that threaten to hit Earth.
There is no reason to stress: NASA clarifies that at the moment no asteroid is making its way towards Earth.
The spacecraft's journey will last about a year and it is supposed to collide with an asteroid about 160 meters in diameter and knock it out of its orbit.
Itai Nevo, editor-in-chief and space correspondent, Davidson Institute, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science, told Kalman Libeskind and Assaf Lieberman on the Kalman-Lieberman program on Channel 2 about NASA's experiment that "the spacecraft will collide with a small asteroid in about a year, and will try to change its trajectory. Its impact on Israel could destroy a city.".
NASA will soon carry out an ambitious project that will turn the "Armageddon" plot into reality and ignite my imagination: sending a spacecraft with the goal of deflecting an asteroid from its orbit.
NASA clarifies that this is an exercise, and there is no asteroid making its way to us. But here is a great opportunity for humanity to test ways to protect the planet, and for me to prepare an article for "World Today."" pic.twitter.com/oWCsMFR9Y5— Itamar Margalit 🌐 Itamar Margalit (@itamargalit) November 18, 2021
