Singer and songwriter Aviv Gefen participated tonight in a Hasidic gathering to commemorate the 19th of Keseli, the day on which Chabad Hasidism celebrates the release of the elderly Rebbe, the author of the Tanya, from prison.
""From here comes the good news for all people - secular and religious - that together is possible, there is a way of togetherness. To me, this is something that is supreme. Chabad is an acronym: 'wisdom,' 'intelligence,' and 'knowledge' - it is something that is constantly evolving and changing. I am also a Chabadnik in my own way. I am constantly evolving with my opinion and also changing.".
Gefen added: "The spirit of religion and Chabad is the soul of Israel that must be preserved. It is the soul and it is the beating heart, and I am proud of you and respect you for believing and studying Torah and pondering and also changing. Chabad, wisdom, understanding and knowledge. This is something that Israel cannot exist without.
""As a secularist, no matter where I am and what position I am in, I will always be there to protect you, your integrity, your heritage, and I love you.".
He later apologized: "I'm not the same Avi from before, I said it in many of my appearances, I used to speak out of ignorance, to amaze and shock people so that they would listen to me because I suffered from a lack of attention - I look you in the eye today and say that if I hurt anyone, I apologize.".
