Maran Ha-Gar'ach Kanievsky sent a special letter to Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon in which he wished him long days and good years, in honor of his 60th birthday.
""May you have long days and years of life and peace added to you" - the rare letter begins, after which the Grach quotes the Mishnah in Avot "Sixty years of old age" (Avot 5:21) - and quotes from the Tosafot 19: "And you shall have books of sixty years of wisdom... 'Sixty years of wisdom' is a notary of sixty years.".
Afterwards, Maran addresses the mayor: "Our esteemed and beloved Ma'al, a living man of many deeds, lovingly bears the burden of a city that has been united and manages it with great skill and action, with concern and an open hand for the communities of those who fear God and satisfying their spiritual and material needs, Mr. Moshe Leon, the 6th Mayor of Jerusalem.",
""Our blessing is given for your standing at the right hand of the community of those who fear God and those who study Torah in general, and in particular for those who have just come, for your commitment to raising the banner of the mighty and those who study the laws of the seventh. May God grant you many more good years, and may the blessing of Heaven accompany you in all your endeavors and deeds, for the good of all and the individual, and for the sanctity of the Holy City, from among the creatures themselves and enlightened from above.".
The rare letter was received by the Mayor of Jerusalem during an event held by the municipality for yeshiva students in honor of the Sabbatical year 5882 and the end of the interregnum of the month of Tishrei.
The mayor wept with emotion when he received the letter, and wholeheartedly congratulated Maran, may he be blessed with many more long days and years of leading the people of Israel until the coming of our righteous Messiah.
