According to him, the coalition "insists on the flawed law and is unable to pass it without the opposition.".
Netanyahu added that his proposal to advance the "Basic Law: Immigration," which was intended to prevent mass naturalization of Palestinians, was also blocked in the past by Ayelet Shaked.
""Bennett and Lapid are unable to preserve the Jewish character of the State of Israel," Netanyahu says in a video he released today (Sunday) ahead of the vote. "Tomorrow they will bring the citizenship law to a vote in the Knesset, with the Ra'am, Meretz, and a MK from the Labor Party opposing it.".
He added: "In order to maintain Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, we must prevent the entry and naturalization of masses of Palestinians into Israel every year. The existing law simply does not meet this requirement. It excludes, within the framework of the law, masses of Palestinians and allows them to enter Israel. The way to fix this is through the Basic Immigration Law that we are introducing, which will seal this loophole and prevent Palestinians from entering Israel.".
He said, "We have been trying to pass this law for several years and were stopped - first by Ayelet Shaked, who was Minister of Justice, and then by Avi Nissenkorn. There is no reason to stop this basic law. It constitutes a legal fence like the physical fence we erected on the Egyptian border that saved Israel from a flood of a million infiltrators.".
Netanyahu emphasized: "We suggested to the coalition to do the right thing - to extend the existing law by two months and immediately pass the Basic Immigration Law in a preliminary reading and complete the legislation of the Basic Law within two months. So far they have refused.".
""They insist on the flawed law, which they are unable to pass without us because they formed a government with Ra'am and Meretz. They expect us to pass the flawed law, not to solve the problem of the State of Israel and ensure its survival as a Jewish and democratic state, but to ensure the survival of their coalition," Netanyahu claimed.
He said, "This is indescribable audacity and shame. This is not how a Zionist government operates. The right way to act is to accept our proposal and pass the Basic Immigration Law in a preliminary reading tomorrow and give Israel control over its borders and who enters it.".
