An indictment has now been filed in the Lod District Court, and a request for detention until the end of the proceedings against a suspect, 56 years old, a resident of the center.
The indictment was filed after an investigation has been underway for several months at the Petah Tikva police station into a sting and fraud against elderly people at ATMs in several cities in the central region of the country.
The investigation revealed that this was the same suspect who, on dozens of occasions, approached "to assist" elderly people who had come to an ATM to withdraw money - then would distract them and steal cash from them, which he withdrew for them, or in other cases - after obtaining the secret code, would steal the credit card and withdraw money later.
Testimony provided by the victims indicated that the suspect disguised himself with a hat and at times it was reported that he appeared to be wearing a wig.
In this way, the suspect swindled dozens of victims for thousands of NIS each, with the total money he stole allegedly amounting to over NIS 200,000.
Investigators from the Petah Tikva station managed to track down the suspect, and yesterday arrested him in an apartment in Ramat Gan, where the wig he was wearing was also seized, along with tens of thousands of shekels in cash.
