Candidate No. 3 on the Yamina list for the 24th Knesset, Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi, announced his resignation a day before the swearing-in of the new Knesset. This was reported this morning (Monday) on Channel 12.

The meaning of Davidi's decision: He will continue to serve as mayor of Sderot and his term as mayor will not expire.

Davidi was Yamina's most significant acquisition on the eve of the elections for the 24th Knesset, and was placed high on the list.

Upon joining the Yamina list, Davidi left the Likud movement, of which he had been a member for many years, despite the Prime Minister's pleas.

The resignation also has significance for coalition talks: Davidi was mentioned as opposing entering a government with left-wing parties and with the assistance of Arab parties - and reports were even published that he would refuse to support such a government.

In his place, former MK Idit Silman will enter the Knesset.

Silman, 40, was the chairwoman of the Jewish Home Party's central committee and a member of Knesset representing the party in the 21st Knesset.

Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi: "I have decided to remain in my position as Mayor of Sderot for now. I joined Yamina out of deep trust in Naftali Bennett's leadership and out of belief in the values of the movement, values of love for the people and the country, performanceism and a deep public mission, and I still believe in the party and my comrades on the path. I thank my friend and colleague, the chairman of the movement Naftali Bennett, and support him in his actions to bring a stable and functioning government to Israel."

Yamina Chairman Naftali Bennett: "Alon Davidi is a valuable and talented member and leader. Alon has decided to remain in his position as mayor of Sderot and therefore will not be sworn in as a member of Knesset. Alon continues in Yamina and will lead the movement's municipal activities in full swing."
