The chairman of the Knesset Labor and Welfare Committee, MK Haim Katz, canceled a discussion at the last minute on Monday morning (Monday) about grants for the unemployed from the Ministry of Finance - until a solution is also provided for the ultra-Orthodox who serve in the national service and were laid off from their jobs due to the coronavirus, but are not entitled by law to receive unemployment benefits.

This morning, a discussion was scheduled to take place in the Knesset's Labor and Welfare Committee on the Ministry of Finance's new grants for the unemployed.

However, right at the beginning of the discussion, the committee chairman stunned the participants and announced the committee's closure - and announced: "We will not approve until a solution is also provided for soldiers with families and national service volunteers.".

Last week, MK Haim Katz declared in the committee hearing that he would not approve the grants that the Ministry of Finance is seeking to give to the unemployed - without also providing a solution for soldiers with families and national service volunteers who were laid off due to the Corona crisis and are not eligible for unemployment benefits.

Let us recall that about two weeks ago, Welfare Committee Chairman Haim Katz stopped the approval of the National Service regulations - until the problem was resolved, but since a solution has not yet been found - he intensified the struggle. .

As first reported in Haredim 10, since the outbreak of the Corona crisis seven months ago, hundreds of Haredim serving in civilian national service have fallen through the cracks because they cannot receive unemployment benefits from National Insurance.

According to the National Insurance Law, a soldier or a civil servant in the national service who received a special work permit during their service are not entitled to unemployment benefits if they go on unpaid leave or are fired.

About a week ago, MK Elazar Stern even initiated a new bill, signed by MKs from all factions, that would regulate the injustice.

The organization "In the Picture," which is accompanying the servicemen's struggle, stated: "This is an important and necessary step. It is impossible for the Ministry of Finance to throw out hundreds of civilian national servicemen and not take care of them. We are certain that a solution will now be found for the benefit of everyone. We will continue to monitor until the last of the servicemen receives the full rights they deserve.".

MK Moshe Aboutubol, a member of the committee and leader of the struggle, said: "I thank the chairman of the committee for his determination on behalf of the issue and the struggle that my members and I are leading. I have warned about this many times, and I hope that the finance officials will be serious and will bring proposals for those who chose to serve in the army and were abandoned during the Corona period.".
