An oil company owned by ultra-Orthodox billionaire Dan Gertler reported today (Thursday) that it has discovered reserves of about three billion barrels of oil in the Democratic Republic of Congo - a similar amount to the proven oil reserves of oil producers in Britain and South Sudan. This is reported by the Reuters news agency from Kinshasa.
The oil deposit was discovered around Lake Albert, located on Congo's eastern border with Uganda. According to the company, analysis of seismic survey data indicates that "the site contains approximately 3 billion barrels of oil.".
"These are very positive results from our extensive seismic campaign," said Oil of DRCongo’s CEO. "We continue to believe that the project has the potential to provide significant revenue, and many other benefits to the people (in Congo)."
Congo is a resource-rich country, but produces only 25,000 barrels of oil a day. Authorities are seeking to dramatically increase production to boost growth and alleviate poverty.
Gertler, an ultra-Orthodox businessman, resident of Bnei Brak, who supports the Torah world, is a highly influential figure in Congo, and has close ties to the government of President Joseph Kabila.
