A serious incident was averted thanks to the vigilance of a teacher at a Jewish school: A man threatened the driver of an Oheli Torah bus full of students with a knife because the driver was blocking traffic on a street in the Crown Heights neighborhood.

The incident occurred at the end of a school day at the Talmud Torah kindergarten, when the bus conducted 'dispersals' and dropped off children near their homes along Brooklyn Avenue.

As the bus driver dropped off one of the children and spoke to the parent at the corner of Sterling Street, the driver of the car behind them got out of his vehicle.

The teacher who was there said: "The man approached angrily and shouted something in an unfamiliar language. I froze in fear when he took a knife out of his car" - she returned after the incident.

""When I saw the knife, I shouted to the bus driver to keep moving. The man started banging on the bus doors with his hands, trying to force them open. Thank God the doors were closed.".

From the closed bus, the teacher called the police. When the attacker recognized this, he got into his car and fled the scene.

Shomerim volunteers arrived quickly, but it took the police 30 minutes to get to the scene. "The police who arrived claimed they did their best, but with the amount of crime in the neighborhood, they don't have enough police to handle every incident.".
