Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will present the strategy for exiting the Corona crisis this evening (Monday), in a special statement.
The National Security Headquarters recommends that government ministers impose a full lockdown on Lag BaOmer, which will take effect next Monday, to prevent gatherings - as part of the national fight to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
The MAL is concerned that gatherings will form around the bonfires throughout the night, and is also seeking to prevent the public from trying to reach Meron, where this year's Rashbi celebration will be held in a limited form - with only three lightings.
The proposal will be brought to the government for discussion.
However, Interior Minister Aryeh Deri announced this evening that he opposes the proposal to impose a lockdown on Lag BaOmer - and believes that it is unnecessary.
'"The data published by the Ministry of Health is definitely good, we are acting rightly only to make things easier for the public, the economy, and the merchants. Therefore, it does not seem right and logical to me to put Israel back into lockdown on Sunday after most of the economy is already operating. The justified prohibition on lighting bonfires will remain in place, but the lockdown is unnecessary.".
