Less conventional preparations for Passover: Inspectors from the Central Enforcement and Investigations Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture (PITZU) raided a pirate egg sorting institute in the city of Hebron last night (Monday), which planned to ship tens of thousands of eggs with 'approved' and 'kosher for Passover' signatures for massive marketing in Israel.
The investigators arrived at the institute through intelligence information. A new egg sorting and stamping machine was found there, which was confiscated by the investigators. The eggs were also banned from marketing.
During the raid, approximately 35,000 eggs were found packaged, sealed, and awaiting marketing.
The fictitious signature bore the name of one of the most approved and well-known institutes in the country. The unit also raided the home of the institute's owner and located evidence proving that the man planned to distribute the tens of thousands of eggs to dozens of marketing centers across the country.
In addition to the owner of the institute, another suspect was arrested, both in their thirties.
Agriculture Minister Yair Shamir commented on the successful raid: "Out of a commitment to protecting public health and preventing economic crime, the Ministry of Agriculture is working tirelessly, everywhere, to thwart food smuggling into Israel.".
Director of the Intelligence Unit at the Ministry of Agriculture, Roy Kliger, explained that in a proper supervision process, eggs marketed in Israel are transferred after being laid to sorting centers throughout the country, where they are inspected and stamped with an expiration date and identification of the sorting center. "Only thanks to the intelligence information received and the cooperation with the army and the Hebron police, were we able to prevent an attempt to harm public health, and the marketing of tens of thousands of eggs prohibited for marketing and human consumption was prevented.".
