MK Shlomo Kerei of the Likud, today (Monday), sent a letter to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, in which he claimed that the indictment process filed against the prime minister "was filed hastily with many errors.".
According to a report on Channel 12, one of the errors Kari noted in the letter is that confidentiality certificates were not submitted, as required by law. Therefore, he is demanding that the Attorney General and the Knesset Speaker resubmit the indictment.
This means that Netanyahu will be able to ask the Knesset for immunity again. However, those close to the Prime Minister emphasized that Netanyahu has no intention of submitting a request for immunity again and that the request submitted to Edelstein and Mandelblit is an independent initiative by the Knesset member.
MK Kari's main argument is that the entire process against Netanyahu should be started over again – regardless of immunity, because, according to him, there were flaws in it.
In his letter, Kerei detailed the sequence of events: The Attorney General submitted the indictment twice, because he needed to add details that he had omitted when submitting the indictment the first time.
""A few hours after the Prime Minister withdrew his immunity request, the indictment was filed by the Attorney General along with a request to extend the time for obtaining confidentiality by 45 days. This request and the filing of an indictment without a certificate of confidentiality, together, are contrary to the law.".
He added: "There is an unpleasant feeling, to say the least, regarding the haste and the expedited process, to the point of an unusual collection of errors, in the Prime Minister's cases. Starting with the expedited hearing that could not be postponed in any way, even though the Attorney General was not present for a significant part of it. Moving on to the immediate formulation of decisions after the hearing, even though this is an unprecedentedly complex case. Continuing with the filing of an indictment lacking the most essential details, such as the list of prosecution witnesses, and ending with the filing of the indictment within a few hours of the Prime Minister's withdrawal of his immunity request, without a confidentiality certificate, and with his hand still outstretched.".
Kari concluded: "I would ask you, Mr. Attorney General, to act in accordance with the Knesset Members' Immunity Law and submit a revised indictment to the Knesset Speaker.".
To the Speaker of the Knesset, he wrote: "I would ask you, Mr. Speaker of the Knesset, to stand up for your right to receive an amended indictment in accordance with the law, and if you answer in the negative, to even consider seeking clarification of the matter in the Supreme Court.".
