Did you misspeak? US Secretary of State John Kerry was recorded sarcastically saying, "What a spot-on operation Israel is carrying out in Gaza.".
Kerry arrived for an interview on Fox News, a network known for opposing the positions of Democratic Party leaders, and in the minutes before the interview, he spoke with his aide. He was unaware that the cameras, which were already running, were recording the conversation.
The aide updated Kerry on the expansion of the ground operation in Gaza, and on the number of Palestinians killed in the attacks in the Shuja'iya neighborhood. Kerry responded cynically: "This is a piece of targeted action," and repeated: "A piece of targeted action, really.".
Kerry added to his aide: "We have to go there. I think we should go there tonight. It would be crazy to just sit around like this.".
Host Chris Wallace, the host of Fox on Sunday, confronted Kerry with the recording. "When you say a piece of targeted action, are you concerned that the Israelis went too far?" Wallace asked Kerry.
Kerry was not confused and replied: "It's very difficult, these situations. Obviously, I responded in the way that anyone would respond, with respect for the children and the civilians.".
Kerry reiterated the American position and said: "The United States believes that Israel has the right to defend itself from rockets fired from the Gaza Strip and from attacks carried out using tunnels that come out from the other side of the border. We fully support them.".
During the interview, Kerry said that during a conversation between US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an alarm sounded and Netanyahu was forced to interrupt the conversation and flee to a protected area. "We can't live like this," Kerry said.
