Destruction of the synagogue in Neve Yaakov: Representatives of the worshippers today distributed a letter from the Rishon LeZion, the Gaon Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, which was sent over a month ago to the Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem on behalf of Shas, Zvika Cohen, requesting that the synagogue be prevented from being destroyed.
In his letter, the Rashal writes that the worshippers approached him and asked him to help them. "I personally visited the place several times and it serves as a place of prayer and Torah study, active and vibrant throughout the week," writes Rabbi Yosef, stating: "It is a severe prohibition to evacuate and destroy this small temple, and there is a sacred duty to do everything in order to maintain this place.".
The mayor concludes his letter with a request to the deputy mayor, "To whom I therefore appeal with a vigorous request to act on the matter and take care of everything necessary, and blessed be he who establishes the words of the Torah to do them.".
However, the Haredim10 learned that since the letter, which was sent on the 26th of Adar 1, Zvika Cohen has worked hard to try and reach an agreed-upon solution, but the representatives of the worshipers stubbornly refused every proposal, and rejected every alternative presented to them.
A senior official in the Jerusalem Municipality tells Haredim10: "The Haredi representatives and Zvika Cohen cannot be blamed. They did everything they could to find a solution. There were long discussions lasting hours with all the relevant parties, but unfortunately the worshippers insisted.".
The source adds: "I saw one of the Shas council members during the great storm in Jerusalem, running around the mayor's office with the aim of trying to protect the synagogue. We are not contractors for success.".
